What Healthcare Professionals Think of mHealth Apps for Chronic Care

This study explored how healthcare professionals perceive More Stamina, an app that helps people with multiple sclerosis (MS) manage fatigue, and how it could fit into clinical care. Guided by the Technology Acceptance Model, we combined interviews and questionnaires with healthcare professionals. They valued the app for facilitating data collection, revealing symptom patterns and supporting personalised care.

What was the context of our study?

Chronic conditions like MS can benefit from mHealth apps that enhance patient self-management and clinical decision-making. Previous studies have explored whether patients adopt these apps, but little is known about how healthcare professionals see their value in the clinical setting.

What did we do?

We investigated healthcare professionals’ perceptions of the More Stamina app using the Technology Acceptance Model. The study combined interviews and questionnaires to explore how professionals perceive the app and how it could be integrated into MS care.

What did we find?

Healthcare professionals highlighted several benefits:

  • Data collection: The app makes it easier to gather information between consultations.
  • Symptom patterns: It helps professionals better understand how a patient’s symptoms change over time.
  • Personalised care: It supports care tailored to each patient.

Both patients and professionals have become more familiar with mobile technologies, which supports the acceptance of mHealth solutions.

Why is this important?

When healthcare professionals find an app useful, it is far more likely to be adopted in clinical practice. These findings are promising for integrating mHealth apps as supportive tools in chronic care.
